Unit review questions
1. On a horizontal number line, what is the opposite of −7?
Need a hint?
  • State what zero represents in the model.
  • A negative sign gives direction; it does not mean the amount is absent.
2. What is the absolute value of −8.5?
Need a hint?
  • Separate magnitude comparison from signed-number comparison.
  • Absolute value never retains a negative sign.
3. Which signed number is greater: 1/4 or -1/4?
Need a hint?
  • Use number-line position for greater and less.
  • For negative values, a larger absolute value can mean a smaller signed value.
4. Reflect (-6,8) across the y-axis. What point results?
Need a hint?
  • Name the reflecting axis before changing a sign.
  • A y-axis reflection changes x, not y.

Use the skills in a new task

Compare −7 and −3, then compare their absolute values and reflect (−4,2) across the y-axis.

Work on paper or in your own document. Explain the choices you made.

  • Show the supplied quantities or shape attributes in a labeled model.
  • Explain each operation or classification using this unit’s definitions.
  • Check the result against the supplied situation.
Compare with a model response

−7<−3 because −7 is farther left. Their distances from zero are 7 and 3, so |−7|>|−3|. Reflecting (−4,2) across y gives (4,2), changing horizontal sign only.

A different response can also meet the criteria. Compare the evidence and reasoning, rather than copying the wording.
