Unit review questions
1. Evaluate 3 to the power 3.
Need a hint?
  • Write out the repeated factors before calculating.
  • Base times exponent is not exponentiation.
2. Evaluate 2x²+3 for x=6.
Need a hint?
  • Replace every variable occurrence with the same supplied input.
  • A coefficient outside x² is not automatically part of the squared base.
3. Which expression is equivalent to 6(x+3)?
Need a hint?
  • Multiply every term inside the group.
  • Matching one chosen input alone does not prove two arbitrary expressions equivalent.
4. Simplify 6x+5+3x.
Need a hint?
  • Match the entire variable part before combining terms.
  • Constants and variable terms are not like units.

Use the skills in a new task

Rewrite 4(x+3)+2x and evaluate it at x=5. Explain the equivalence for other x values.

Work on paper or in your own document. Explain the choices you made.

  • Show the supplied quantities or shape attributes in a labeled model.
  • Explain each operation or classification using this unit’s definitions.
  • Check the result against the supplied situation.
Compare with a model response

Distribution gives 4x+12+2x=6x+12. At x=5 both forms give 42. The operation properties establish equivalence for every allowed x; one matching input alone would not prove it.

A different response can also meet the criteria. Compare the evidence and reasoning, rather than copying the wording.
