Find the idea the details support
Distinguish a central idea from one interesting detail.
Supplied materials
- Original fictional passage: On Monday the school garden team found three dry beds. They made a watering chart and put a cup beside each bed to check how much water it received. By Friday every bed had been checked daily. The team decided to keep the chart because it helped them notice missed jobs.
- Paper or a note app.
Learn the idea
A central idea brings important details together. A detail tells one part of what happened. Choose an idea that the passage supports, rather than a broad rule the passage never tests.
To support your answer, connect at least two details to it. A passage about one team cannot prove that every garden succeeds or that charts solve every problem.
- Underline the problem in the first sentence.
- Circle the team’s two checking tools.
- Write a one-sentence central idea.
- Compare your idea with the choices and identify two supporting details.
See the method in action
The detail “three dry beds” explains the problem, but it is not the whole idea. “A simple checking routine helped the team track its garden work” fits both the daily checks and the decision to keep the chart.

See the answer and explanation
The team used a checking routine to make garden jobs easier to track.
The chart, daily checks and final decision all support a routine for tracking jobs. The passage does not claim a survival guarantee or prescribe a number of beds.
Take it further
Write a new final sentence saying that two jobs were still missed. Revise the central idea so it describes help without promising perfect results.
