  • Use the supplied fictional observations or model. Paper and pencil are optional; spoken answers are welcome. No equipment or real experiment is needed.

Learn the idea

A replication checks a comparison with another set of observations. Specify the changed factor, measured outcome, controls, duration, and number of cases so someone can understand what was compared. More seedlings and repeated weeks can reveal variation, but a study still has a scope: species, setting, and measurement period all matter.

Use a supplied second fictional trial: same-species seedlings are assigned by a random label draw to 6 or 3 light-hours; water, pots, soil, temperature, and starting size are alike. Growth over one week is 6-hour: 1, 2, 3 cm; 3-hour: 1, 2, 3 cm. Both means are 2 cm. The first seed comparison’s 1 cm gap is not reproduced in this trial; combining the records requires reporting that disagreement.

  1. Name daily light hours as factor and one-week height growth as outcome.
  2. List controls and explain the random-label assignment.
  3. Compute both new means and compare with the seed’s 3 versus 2 cm means.
  4. Draft a limited report and a next plan with more randomly assigned seedlings.
Worked example

See the method in action

The repeat means are both (1 + 2 + 3)/3 = 2 cm. Unlike the seed’s 1 cm gap, this repeat has no mean gap. The two small trials give mixed results, so the claim should remain tentative.

Which report uses both trials carefully?

Feedback appears here after you check. This is practice, not a graded school assessment.

See the answer and explanation

One small trial had a 1 cm mean gap and the repeat had none; gather more comparable evidence.

Both records matter. A failed repeat does not prove a factor is irrelevant in every setting, just as one initial gap is not a universal rule.

Take it further

Replace repeat 6-hour growths with 3, 4, 5 cm. That mean is 4 versus 2 cm, a 2 cm gap. Report that the repeat now has a larger gap than the seed, rather than saying the effects match exactly.
