Unit review questions
1. Opening: We should label each model. Development: unlabeled parts confused readers in the supplied class record. Transition: therefore. Closing: Labels are the supported next step. Which text type does the supplied opening best establish?
Need a hint?
  • A claim begins an argument.
  • A setting does not by itself explain a process.
2. Opening: We should label each model. Development: unlabeled parts confused readers in the supplied class record. Transition: therefore. Closing: Labels are the supported next step. Which tool develops the supplied idea?
Need a hint?
  • Explain why evidence matters.
  • An adjective alone is not an argument’s evidence.
3. Opening: We should label each model. Development: unlabeled parts confused readers in the supplied class record. Transition: therefore. Closing: Labels are the supported next step. What connection does the supplied transition make?
Need a hint?
  • Then signals time in this task.
  • Therefore needs prior reasoning; it is not decoration.
4. Opening: We should label each model. Development: unlabeled parts confused readers in the supplied class record. Transition: therefore. Closing: Labels are the supported next step. What is the supplied closing’s function?
Need a hint?
  • A conclusion should grow from the text.
  • Restating a position is not permission to add a stronger unsupported claim.

Use the skills in a new task

Make a short complete response demonstrating the four skills in this unit. Using supplied fictional facts—a paper model has a fold, three labeled parts, and a label helped two classmates name those parts—write a short explanation and a separate supported argument for labels. Add a connected opening, development, transition and ending to each. Do not claim measured learning beyond the supplied record. Longer writing targets in optional extensions can be completed in a later session.

Work on paper or in your own document. Explain the choices you made.

  • Read what the opening actually begins to do. Continue with the matching kind of development rather than switching purpose without a reason.
  • Identify the supplied detail and the role it plays. Add a second detail that serves the same genre.
  • Read both connected ideas and identify the relationship expressed by the stated transition.
  • Compare the ending with the genre and preceding material. Make the closure connect without adding an unrelated new subject.
Compare with a model response

Explanation—opening: A paper hinge lets two panels turn relative to each other. Development: its pressed fold guides the bend while the paper joins the panels. Transition: Therefore, the panels can change angle without separating in this model. Ending: The fold and attachments together explain the movement. Argument—opening: We should retain the labels on this model. Development: the supplied record says two classmates used the labels to name its parts. Transition: Because the labels connected the names to the parts for those classmates, keeping them is reasonable here. Ending: Keep this model's labels while leaving wider usefulness to a larger trial. This does not claim measured learning for all learners.

A different response can also meet the criteria. Compare the evidence and reasoning, rather than copying the wording.
