Apply interpret a root in context, locate stressed syllables, choose a precise meaning, identify an academic instruction using supplied texts and original responses.
Bring the unit skills together
Use these 4 new cases to check your reasoning. Choices are temporary and are not saved to an account, sent to staff or recorded as school grades. Download your current review choices before leaving or reloading.
The download contains your current choices and any checked feedback. Keep the separate transfer-task work in your own document; downloading its instructions does not mark it complete.
Use the skills in a new task
Make a short complete response demonstrating the four skills in this unit. Use this supplied word: hydrology, the study of water; pronunciation hy-DROL-o-gy. Mark the root and stress. Write separate sentences for a river bank and a financial bank. Compare them by identifying the shared spelling and different meanings. Longer writing targets in optional extensions can be completed in a later session.
Work on paper or in your own document. Explain the choices you made.
- Separate the stated root from other parts, combine meanings and check whether the context supports that interpretation.
- Read the hyphen-separated pronunciation guide and locate its capitalized syllable. Say the word with that emphasis.
- Read the complete context, try each supplied sense and retain the one that makes the sentence coherent.
- Name the command and produce the kind of response it requests. Use the stated input rather than changing the question.
Compare with a model response
Hydrology means the study of water; hydro- suggests water and hy-DROL-o-gy stresses the second syllable. A river bank is land beside water; a financial bank handles money. The same spelling has different contextual senses. Comparing them identifies shared spelling and different meanings. Summarizing would condense their main distinction, while classifying would place examples into meaning groups.
A different response can also meet the criteria. Compare the evidence and reasoning, rather than copying the wording.
