Add an Alternative Feeding Route

Use a food web to make a bounded claim about food availability.

Supplied materials

  • Use the supplied fictional observations or model. Paper and pencil are optional; spoken answers are welcome. No equipment or real experiment is needed.

Learn the idea

A chain highlights one feeding route; a web can show alternatives. Our supplied fictional relationships are grass eaten by rabbits, berry plants eaten by rabbits, and rabbits eaten by foxes. For this diagram, arrows point from food to consumer and track transferred food energy. Draw both grass → rabbit and berry plant → rabbit before drawing rabbit → fox.

Now remove grass from the paper model. The berry-plant route to rabbits remains. The web therefore supports saying rabbits still have one shown food source; it does not guarantee enough food for every rabbit or an unchanged fox population. Quantities, seasons, disease, and other relationships are not provided. An honest model conclusion names both its remaining route and its limits.

  1. Draw both producer-to-rabbit arrows and rabbit → fox.
  2. Mark the two shown food sources for rabbits.
  3. Cross out only grass and its arrow.
  4. Trace the remaining berry plant → rabbit → fox route and state what cannot be predicted exactly.
Worked example

See the method in action

Removing grass leaves berry plant → rabbit → fox. That is a remaining represented energy route, not proof that the populations will stay the same.

Your turn

After grass is removed, which claim is supported by this model?

Feedback appears here after you check. This is practice, not a graded school assessment.

See the answer and explanation

The berry-plant route remains, but population numbers are unknown.

The berry-plant arrow still reaches rabbits. The diagram supplies no amounts or population rule.

Take it further

Add a supplied relationship “mice eat berry plants; foxes eat mice.” A second route berry plant → mouse → fox now remains. Two shown routes still do not establish exact population counts.

Nothing here is saved to an account or sent to a teacher. The answer download includes your current choice and any checked feedback.
