Study guide: Waves, Patterns and Information
Connect repeated wave patterns to motion and communication.
Ideas to explain in your own words
- A wave carries a disturbance. Wavelength measures repeating spatial separation; amplitude measures displacement from rest. A wave model does not show matter traveling with the pattern over the whole route.
- In the supplied rope model, a marked piece moves up and down while the wave pattern moves along. Water surface models are simplified and real particle motion can differ.
- Wavelength equals span divided by complete wavelengths. The model assumes equally spaced repeats.
- Digital codes use discrete symbols. In this original paper code, 00 means stop, 01 go, 10 wait and 11 help. The meaning comes from the agreed table.
Useful vocabulary
- crest
- highest point of the modeled wave
- pattern motion
- disturbance moves along the model
- cm
- Centimeter is one hundredth of a meter.
- Wavelength
- Wavelength equals span divided by complete wavelengths.
- stop
- 00 in this supplied code
Watch your reasoning
- Check what crest and trough each mean. They describe different clues.
- Check what pattern motion and particle motion each mean. They describe different clues.
- Using the distractor operation a*b instead of a/b; Count full matching-point intervals.
A worked review example
Worked reference-card problem: a card states “highest point of the modeled wave”; a second states “lowest point of the modeled wave.” The first fits crest and the second fits trough. The reason is the described function or change, not the order of the cards or a favorite name. If their descriptions exchange places, their category labels exchange too. Keep the supplied descriptions attached to the correct case. Worked reference-card problem: a card states “disturbance moves along the model”; a second states “marked piece moves locally.” The first fits pattern motion and the second fits particle motion. The reason is the described function or change, not the order of the cards or a favorite name. If their descriptions exchange places, their category labels exchange too. Keep the supplied descriptions attached to the correct case. Worked distinct example: A distinct model spans 14 cm across 2 full wavelengths: 14/2=7 cm. Method: identify the quantities in the stated rule, substitute using compatible units, and perform the operations in the correct order. Count full matching-point intervals. State the centimeter unit. Interpret the final unit and keep the model assumption visible; this calculation is not a measurement of a real learner or site. Worked reference-card problem: a card states “00 in this supplied code”; a second states “01 in this supplied code.” The first fits stop and the second fits go. The reason is the described function or change, not the order of the cards or a favorite name. If their descriptions exchange places, their category labels exchange too. Keep the supplied descriptions attached to the correct case.
Make a practice plan
- Use an example from Identify wave features. Say what happens and point to the clue that helps explain it.
- Complete Distinguish wave motion from material motion and correct the specific misconception in its feedback.
- Resolve a changed case from Measure a repeated wavelength, then combine the four ideas in the transfer task.
