Unit review questions
1. Split every fifth into two equal parts. Which fraction equals 4/5?
2. For the same whole, how do 3/5 and 7/10 compare?
3. What is 2/12 + 5/12?
4. Three lengths are each 1/4 meter. How long are they altogether?

Use the skills in a new task

Plan pretend paper lengths in meters. Compare 3/4 meter with 5/8 meter by renaming. On a separate strip, join 2/8 meter and 3/8 meter, then remove 1/8 meter. Find the total for three copies of the remaining length. Explain every denominator and give a fraction equivalent to the final total.

Work on paper or in your own document. Explain the choices you made.

  • Use 3/4 = 6/8 to conclude 3/4 > 5/8.
  • Join 2/8 + 3/8 = 5/8, then remove 1/8 to get 4/8.
  • Compute 3 × 4/8 = 12/8 meters.
  • Explain that eighth-meter parts keep their size and rename 12/8 as 3/2 or 1 1/2.
Compare with a model response

Three fourths is six eighths, so it is larger than five eighths. The other strip gives 2/8 + 3/8 − 1/8 = 4/8 meter. Three copies give 12/8 meters, equivalent to 3/2 or 1 1/2 meters. The denominators name the part size; they are not added.

A different response can also meet the criteria. Compare the evidence and reasoning, rather than copying the wording.
