Compare Two Shown Routes

Calculate and compare complete fictional route lengths.

Supplied materials

  • Original fictional map: each listed path segment represents 150 meters. Route A, hall to pond, has four segments: hall–tree–gate–bench–pond. Route B has six segments: hall–shed–garden–well–statue–bridge–pond. These are the only two routes compared; no unlisted shortcut is supplied.

Learn the idea

A route distance is the sum of distances along the path you follow. Count connections between stops, not the number of stop names. Five named stops on Route A make four path segments. Multiply that segment count by the map’s stated distance per segment and keep meters in the answer.

Comparison needs the same rule for both routes. Since every listed segment represents 150 meters, we can compare four segments with six. The difference tells us how much longer one shown route is. It does not prove the shorter route is open, easier, safer, or suitable for any real person. Those are different questions requiring different evidence.

  1. Count the connections in each route.
  2. Multiply each segment count by 150 meters.
  3. Subtract the shorter length from the longer.
  4. State precisely which shown route is shorter and name one travel question the calculation cannot answer.
Worked example

See the method in action

“Route A: 4 × 150 = 600 m. Route B: 6 × 150 = 900 m. B is 300 m longer; A is shorter among these two shown routes. The map does not establish opening hours.”

How much longer is Route B than Route A under this map rule?

Feedback appears here after you check. This is practice, not a graded school assessment.

300 m.

Six minus four is two extra segments; 2 × 150 = 300 meters. Equivalently, 900 − 600 = 300 meters.

Take it further

Changed map rule: each segment represents 75 meters, with the same routes. Model reasoning: “A becomes 4 × 75 = 300 m; B becomes 6 × 75 = 450 m. Their difference is 150 m. The segment counts stay the same while the represented distances change.”
