Trace Energy through a Flashlight

Explain a simple energy pathway without claiming energy is created.

Learn the idea

Energy can move between objects and change form. In a battery-powered flashlight, stored chemical energy in the battery supplies electrical energy in the circuit. The light source transfers energy as light and also warms its surroundings.

A pathway is a model, so it highlights useful parts rather than every detail. We will draw a battery, a circuit, and a light source on paper. No battery, wiring, or disassembly is required. A flashlight does not create energy from nothing.

  1. Draw three boxes: battery, circuit, light source.
  2. Connect them with arrows showing the energy pathway.
  3. Label the start stored chemical energy and the middle electrical energy.
  4. Add outward arrows from the light source labeled light and warming.

A checked description is: battery’s stored chemical energy → electrical energy in the circuit → light and thermal energy transferred to the surroundings.

Which statement best describes the battery-powered flashlight in this model?

Feedback appears here after you check. This is practice, not a graded school assessment.

See the answer and explanation

Stored battery energy supplies electrical energy, then light and warming.

The battery supplies stored energy. The circuit transfers energy to the light source, which gives off light and also thermal energy. The model neither creates energy nor claims all the energy becomes light.

Take it further

Compare an electric fan on paper: supplied electrical energy can lead to moving blades and warming. Name the useful output and one other transfer without connecting or opening a real device.
