Supplied materials

  • Paper and a pencil; drawing and spoken explanations are welcome. An adult may read directions and options aloud.
  • Supplied worked-case record: In 43,208, the four represents 40,000 and the three represents 3,000.
  • All quantities and shape descriptions are supplied in the worked example and questions; no purchase or personal information is needed.

Learn the idea

Each place to the left is ten times the place next to it. A digit’s value depends on its position, not only its face. Expanded form separates these values; a zero holds a place open. This same structure explains why shifting a whole number’s digits left multiplies its value by ten.

Read each digit as its place value. Join the expanded parts to recover the numeral, and compare a stated tenfold change using those positions. Check by reversing the change with division by ten.

Read a digit together with its place name. A zero placeholder is necessary even though it contributes no groups. Use a place chart through hundred-thousands and write expanded values beneath the digits.

  2. Follow the worked example. Point to each number or shape feature and say what it tells you.
  3. Read each digit as its place value.
  4. Try the question and then the three practice questions. Check your answers and explain any change you make.
Worked example

See the method in action

In 43,208, the four represents 40,000 and the three represents 3,000. Expanded form is 40,000+3,000+200+8. Multiplying 4,320 by ten gives 43,200 because every digit’s represented value becomes ten times as large. Read a digit together with its place name. A zero placeholder is necessary even though it contributes no groups. Use a place chart through hundred-thousands and write expanded values beneath the digits.

120340

Every digit’s place value becomes ten times as large. The result is 120340.

Take it further

Write 507,060 in expanded form. Expected: 500,000+7,000+60.
