Learn the idea

A screen model can use coordinates to locate an object. In our model x increases right and y increases down, so it differs from some graph conventions. Movements change one coordinate at a time. Record the coordinate rule before tracing a picture so the direction does not depend on guesswork.

Apply the stated coordinate direction and report the final ordered pair. Do not use an upward-positive y convention when the screen model says down is positive.

Use this supplied case: Screen rule: right adds x; down adds y. Start(1,1), move right 2 and down 3. Final position? Use the details in this example. Say which detail helped you choose. This pretend example does not tell us how every real system works.

  1. Follow the worked example one step at a time. Say or draw what happens.
  2. Apply the stated coordinate direction and report the final ordered pair.
  3. Say which detail makes the example answer fit. Pick another answer and say why it does not fit.
  4. Try the question and practice questions. Read the rule again if your answer does not match the explanation.
Worked example

See the method in action

Screen rule: right adds x; down adds y. Start(1, 1), move right 2 and down 3. Final position? The supported answer is (3, 4). The right and downward moves add to their respective coordinates. Apply the stated coordinate direction and report the final ordered pair. Do not use an upward-positive y convention when the screen model says down is positive.

Helpful tips
  • Apply the stated coordinate direction and report the final ordered pair.
  • Do not use an upward-positive y convention when the screen model says down is positive.
Screen rule: right adds x; down adds y. Start(2,3), move right 3 and down 1. Final position?

(5,4)

The right and downward moves add to their respective coordinates. Apply the stated coordinate direction and report the final ordered pair.

Take it further

Screen rule: x right, y down. Start(2, 2), move left 1 and up 1. Expected:(1, 1); explicitly apply the stated coordinate convention.

More practice: try new cases

Choose an answer for each problem. Explain your method on paper, then use the feedback to decide what to revisit.
