Unit review questions
1. A whole strip has six equal parts; two are shaded. What fraction is shaded?
2. The unit from 0 to 1 has eight equal intervals. Where is the third tick after zero?
3. For matching wholes, which is true?
4. Which fraction equals 1/2 of the same whole?

Use the skills in a new task

Draw a pretend trail from 0 to 1 split into eight equal sections. A sign is at the end of the fourth section and another at the end of the sixth. Name both fractions, compare their distances from zero, and show why the first sign is also at one half. Use a matching strip to show the first four sections shaded.

Work on paper or in your own document. Explain the choices you made.

  • Name positions 4/8 and 6/8.
  • Count intervals from zero rather than counting the zero tick.
  • State 4/8 < 6/8 for this same unit trail.
  • Show four shaded of eight equal sections and explain 4/8 = 1/2.
Compare with a model response

The first sign is 4/8 of one unit from zero; the second is 6/8. Four eighths is less than six eighths. Four shaded parts and four unshaded parts make two equal amounts, so 4/8 is also 1/2.

A different response can also meet the criteria. Compare the evidence and reasoning, rather than copying the wording.
