Review: Interpret Scaled Data and Shape Categories

Read scaled picture graphs, fraction-marked line plots, quadrilateral categories, and area partitions.

Unit review questions
1. Key: one symbol means 3 votes. A row has 7 symbols. How many votes are shown?
Need a hint?
  • Write the key next to the row before multiplying.
  • Symbols and recorded items are different units when the key exceeds one.
2. Lengths in inches are ['1/4', '1/4', '1/2', '1/2', '1/2']. How many measurements equal 1/2?
Need a hint?
  • Make the fractional intervals equally spaced.
  • Frequency marks count observations rather than adding their measured lengths.
3. Must every quadrilateral be a square?
Need a hint?
  • Check each category’s required attributes.
  • A shape may belong to both a broad category and one or more narrower categories.
4. A whole has 16 equal tiles, split into equal 4-tile shares. What fraction is one share?
Need a hint?
  • Count how many equal shares cover the whole.
  • The denominator is the share count, not the number of tiles in one share.

Use the skills in a new task

A picture graph has a key of 5 votes per symbol and rows of 4 and 7 symbols. State totals and difference.

Work on paper or in your own document. Explain the choices you made.

  • Draw or label the numbers or shape features the task gives you.
  • Say why each calculation or shape choice follows the ideas in this unit.
  • Check that your answer fits the story or drawing in the task.
Compare with a model response

The rows show 20 and 35 votes; their difference is 15 votes. The difference of three symbols must also be multiplied by the key of five.

A different response can also meet the criteria. Compare the evidence and reasoning, rather than copying the wording.
