Study guide: Wave Optics and Resolution
Calculate wave and ray quantities and distinguish model assumptions.
Ideas to explain in your own words
- Wavelength in meters equals wave speed in meters per second divided by frequency in hertz. These generic model speeds are not light speed.
- Reflection angle from the normal equals supplied incidence angle from the normal. Do not measure one angle from the surface and the other from normal.
- Overlapping waves combine by superposition in the model. In-phase displacements can reinforce; opposite displacements can partly or fully cancel at a point. Energy is redistributed, not simply destroyed.
- An image’s detail depends on wave behavior, aperture and measurement conditions. Magnifying an already blurred image does not automatically recover missing detail. A simplified diagram cannot demonstrate instrument performance.
Useful vocabulary
- m
- Meter is the SI length unit; a displacement also needs its reference and direction.
- Wavelength in meters
- Wavelength in meters equals wave speed in meters per second divided by frequency in hertz.
- degrees
- Degree is an angular unit; a complete circle has 360 degrees.
- Reflection angle from the normal
- Reflection angle from the normal equals supplied incidence angle from the normal.
- constructive
- displacements reinforce at this point
- magnification
- image enlargement
Watch your reasoning
- Using the distractor operation a*b instead of a/b; Use a fixed specified propagation speed.
- Using the distractor operation 90-a instead of a; Measure both angles from the normal.
- Confusing constructive with destructive although their functions or changes differ.
A worked review example
Worked distinct example: A distinct generic wave travels 18 m/s at 3 Hz: wavelength 18/3=6 m. Method: identify the quantities in the stated rule, substitute using compatible units, and perform the operations in the correct order. Use a fixed specified propagation speed. Frequency is not the wave’s spatial separation. Interpret the final unit and keep the model assumption visible; this calculation is not a measurement of a real learner or site. Worked distinct example: A distinct ray arrives at 30° from the normal: reflected angle is 30° from the normal. Method: identify the quantities in the stated rule, substitute using compatible units, and perform the operations in the correct order. Measure both angles from the normal. The normal is perpendicular to the surface. Interpret the final unit and keep the model assumption visible; this calculation is not a measurement of a real learner or site. Worked supplied problem: At one point two modeled displacements are +3 and -2 mm. Predict the combined displacement. Solution: Superposition gives +3+(-2)=+1 mm. Opposing displacements partially cancel at that point; the result is not zero unless magnitudes match. Local cancellation does not mean all wave energy is destroyed. This conclusion uses the stated observations and the mechanism explained above; it does not establish every unmeasured feature of a real organism, device or place. Worked supplied problem: A blurred image is enlarged fourfold without new measurement. Explain what changes and what does not. Solution: Displayed dimensions increase but unresolved fine detail is not automatically recovered. Magnification and resolving power are different. Improving resolution requires appropriate instrument and measurement evidence. This conclusion uses the stated observations and the mechanism explained above; it does not establish every unmeasured feature of a real organism, device or place.
