Useful vocabulary

Identify a definition strategy
A writer can define by class and features, contrast, examples or an operational rule. Operational definitions specify how a study will count or classify, not necessarily every ordinary meaning.
Identify a hidden assumption
An argument may depend on unstated conditions about definitions, comparability, reporting or resources. A sound reading makes those conditions visible rather than silently accepting them.
Recognize an essay development pattern
An extended essay can explore one case deeply, sort by criteria, explain through a bounded analogy or refine a claim with exceptions. Each has a different reasoning job.
Interpret an ambiguity
Ambiguity can arise from a pronoun, a word with multiple meanings, a qualifier’s reach or an uncertain causal relation. Specify the type before proposing a clarification.

A worked review example

Excerpt A: A hinge is a movable joint whose distinguishing feature is permitting connected pieces to turn relative to each other. Excerpt B: The writer compares a one-week adult survey with a one-year all-ages survey as if their percentages represented the same population and period. Excerpt C: Jo attached a paper strip between two panels. On the first bend the crease flexed; on the fifth the paper tore. She replaced the strip and wrote the observed limit beside the model. Following this one model shows what the test record contains. Excerpt D: The proposal says the activity is accessible, but accessible may mean merely online or usable by the specified learner. Identify a definition strategy: Evidence: A hinge is a movable joint whose distinguishing feature is permitting connected pieces to turn relative to each other. Reasoning: category plus distinguishing features is supported because a general category is narrowed by the feature distinguishing this concept. One example alone may not establish all boundaries. Identify a hidden assumption: Evidence: The writer compares a one-week adult survey with a one-year all-ages survey as if their percentages represented the same population and period. Reasoning: the samples are comparable is supported because unlike groups or periods are treated as interchangeable without justification. A requirement on paper does not prove resources exist. Recognize an essay development pattern: Evidence: Jo attached a paper strip between two panels. On the first bend the crease flexed; on the fifth the paper tore. She replaced the strip and wrote the observed limit beside the model. Following this one model shows what the test record contains. Reasoning: extended example is supported because one concrete model is developed through linked stages. Exceptions can refine a claim instead of simply destroying it. Interpret an ambiguity: Evidence: The proposal says the activity is accessible, but accessible may mean merely online or usable by the specified learner. Reasoning: multiple meanings of a key term is supported because a key term can denote two different things and the writer has not selected one. Clarification should not invent evidence about cause.

Make a practice plan

  1. Practice identify a definition strategy: Use the supplied strategy and explain what it clarifies. Identify any boundary the definition leaves open.
  2. Practice identify a hidden assumption: Trace the stated inference and identify the condition required by the supplied case. Explain what changes if it fails.
  3. Practice recognize an essay development pattern: Identify the supplied pattern and its organizing rule. Evaluate whether details actually serve it.
  4. Practice interpret an ambiguity: Use the stated competing readings. Revise only the ambiguous element while preserving the established information.
  5. Use the new review case without consulting its answer first. Return to the specific lesson if your explanation misses the distinction.
