Use the skills in a new task

Make a short complete response demonstrating the four skills in this unit. Write an original short story beginning amid a journey. Include a guide or threshold guardian, a character tension supported by action, and an ending that partly fulfills the initial expectation while leaving a cost. Outline a second opening and explain its effect on suspense. Longer writing targets in optional extensions can be completed in a later session.

Work on paper or in your own document. Explain the choices you made.

  • Compare the opening’s time and information with the stated story chronology. Explain what readers must infer or wait to learn.
  • Use the character’s stated narrative function. Explain the role’s effect on the protagonist’s choices.
  • State the opening expectation and compare the actual or withheld ending. Identify what is settled and what remains uncertain.
  • Identify the two elements held in tension and explain their effect on a choice. Do not invent a hidden belief absent from the text.
Compare with a model response

Jo was already running when the journey opened. At the gate, a guardian asked for the complete model record. Jo wanted entry and recognition but had hidden a tear. Lea, serving as a guide, pointed to the missing note. Jo disclosed the tear and entered, though the prize chance had changed. The opening begins amid action; the ending partly fulfills arrival with a cost. A retrospective opening would reveal that consequence earlier and shift suspense.

A different response can also meet the criteria. Compare the evidence and reasoning, rather than copying the wording.
