Study guide: Our Community, Past and Present
Describe change over time and avoid stereotypes about communities.
Ideas to explain in your own words
- Transportation changes, but older and newer methods can exist together. Walking uses human movement; animal-powered transport uses animals; steam engines use heated water to create motion; electric transport uses electrical energy. A newer invention does not make every older method disappear.
- People have used letters, printed newspapers, telegraphs and telephones to communicate. These methods transmit different forms of information. A letter carries written words; a newspaper distributes printed reports; a telegraph transmits coded signals; a telephone transmits a voice. Dates and access differ across places.
- Culture includes learned ways of communicating, making things and sharing meanings. A tradition is passed along, but people can adapt it. Language is one part of culture; food and music are others. One person’s example cannot describe every member of a community.
- In Montgomery, Alabama, Black residents challenged segregation on buses through a boycott that began in 1955 after Rosa Parks’s arrest. A boycott means refusing to buy or use a service as protest. Participants organized alternative travel. This was a real civil-rights campaign, not an invented story.

- Mixing up Walking and Animal-powered transport. Re-read what each note says before choosing.
- Adding a detail that is not on the card. Point to the words that help explain your answer.
A worked review example
Worked example: The card says: “A historical traveler follows a path on foot.” That matches Walking. Walking is travel using a person’s own steps. Compare the note for Steam-powered transport: Steam-powered transport is an engine uses steam to create movement. That is a different clue.
Make a practice plan
- Read or listen to the notes in the four lessons. An adult can read aloud.
- Try each lesson’s main question and three practice questions. Say, draw or write what helped you choose.
- Use the review cards, then try the changed card in any lesson you want to practice again.
- Complete the four-box task. Then try the separate subject-test cards.
