Follow a Connected Path

Use stated path connections without inventing a shortcut.

Supplied materials

  • Original fictional map key: L=library, B=bench, G=garden, P=playground. Complete path list: L connects to B; B connects to G; G connects to P. There are no other paths on this practice map. Draw four labeled dots and those three lines.

Learn the idea

A path line shows a connection on a map. To describe a route, name each connected place in order. A place can be your destination even when there is no direct line from your starting point. You may need to go through the places joined by the lines.

Our map’s complete path list joins L to B, then B to G, then G to P. It does not show a line straight from L to P. We can follow the drawn connections in a pretend route, but a map description alone cannot tell us whether a real path is open or suitable for travel.

  1. Copy the four labels and three connections exactly.
  2. Trace the line from L to B with your finger.
  3. Continue through connected places until P.
  4. Say the entire route and check every pair against the supplied path list.
Worked example

See the method in action

“L, B, G, P: library, bench, garden, playground.” Each next stop has a listed connection. L to P in one jump is not a shown path.

Your turn

Check your reasoning

Your answer is temporary and is not saved to an account. Download your current answer before leaving or reloading. Written work on paper or in another app stays in your own file.

Which route follows the complete path list from library to playground?

Feedback appears here after you check. This is practice, not a graded school assessment.

See the answer and explanation

L, B, G, P.

L–B, B–G, and G–P are all listed. Each other answer uses at least one unlisted connection.

Take it further

Changed map: add a new path joining B directly to P. Give a route with fewer path lines. Model reasoning: “L, B, P uses two lines. The added B–P connection lets me skip G; I could not skip G before it was supplied.”

Nothing here is saved to an account or sent to a teacher. The answer download includes your current choice and any checked feedback.
