Choose for Two Light Goals

Check whether one material satisfies two stated requirements.

Supplied materials

  • Use the supplied fictional observations or model. Paper and pencil are optional; spoken answers are welcome. No equipment or real experiment is needed.

Learn the idea

A design choice begins with the job you need the material to do. A cover for a pretend display must let some light through and hide a clear view of the picture behind it. “Let some light through” is different from “block all light.” A material can meet one requirement and fail another.

Use new fictional test results: cover J transmits light and gives a clear view; cover K transmits light and gives a blurred view; cover L blocks light. J meets the light requirement but not the hidden-picture requirement. K meets both. L hides the picture but also blocks the needed light. The decision follows the notes rather than a real product claim.

  1. Write the two requirements: transmit some light and blur the picture.
  2. Mark yes or no for each requirement beside J, K, and L.
  3. Find the row with two yes marks.
  4. Write a choice sentence using both pieces of evidence.
Worked example

See the method in action

K has “yes” for transmitting light and “yes” for blurring the picture. J is yes/no, and L is no/yes. K is the only cover meeting both recorded requirements.

Your turn

Which cover meets both requirements in these supplied tests?

Feedback appears here after you check. This is practice, not a graded school assessment.

K

K lets light through while blurring the view. J preserves a clear view and L blocks the required light.

Take it further

Change the goal to “block all tested light.” L now fits best; K no longer meets that changed goal because it transmits some light.
