Add One Whole Ten
Find ten more by changing the tens and keeping the ones.
Supplied materials
- Paper and pencil, or a trusted adult to read aloud.
- Supplied starting number: 24; one new group of ten is added.
Learn the idea
Adding ten adds a whole ten-box. It does not add just one dot. If you start with two tens and four ones, one more ten gives three tens and four ones. The number of single ones stays four.
Use the place-value picture before using a shortcut. In these examples the tens digit increases by one because the total remains below one hundred. Say twenty-four, thirty-four to hear the ten change.
- Draw two ten-boxes and four ones for 24.
- Add a third ten-box and leave the four ones alone.
- Write 24 + 10 = 34, then find ten more than 46 using the same picture.
See the method in action
24 + 10 = (20 + 4) + 10 = 30 + 4 = 34. Three ten-boxes hold thirty dots and the four loose dots make thirty-four.

56
46 has four tens and six ones. Adding one ten gives five tens and six ones: 46 + 10 = 56.
Take it further
Add two tens to 46 instead. Six tens and six ones make 66: 46 + 20 = 66. Explain why the ones digit still shows six.
