Supplied materials

  • Paper or a text document; all cases below are original fictional learning inputs.
  • An adult may read aloud; drawing or spoken answers are valid. No personal health information or physical performance is required.
  • The made-up strip is wet, soap bubbles, scrub twenty seconds, rinse, dry. The bubbles represent lather, so the five-step order is correct. A second strip skips from soap to dry. It needs the scrub and rinse cards inserted before dry. Looking clean is not evidence that those missing steps happened, and a twenty-second scrub is only one part of the whole routine.
  • A card strip reads wet-lather-scrub-rinse-dry. What fits?
  • A strip reads wet-lather-rinse-dry. What repair fits?
  • A strip reads wet-lather-scrub-dry. What repair fits?
  • A strip begins lather-wet-scrub-rinse-dry. What repair fits?
  • A poster shows bubbles then rinsing with no rubbing time. What repair fits?
  • A poster has twenty-second scrub followed immediately by a towel. What repair fits?

Learn the idea

Hands can carry germs even when they look clean. Soap, rubbing and rinsing help remove dirt and germs. For community handwashing, CDC recommends scrubbing for at least twenty seconds.

The order is wet, lather, scrub, rinse, dry. Lather means making soap bubbles over the hands, including backs, between fingers and under nails. Rinsing too early leaves out the scrub step. Drying comes after rinsing.

Use paper cards in this lesson. An adult may help with a real routine separately, but no sink or product is needed to complete the task. We never test germs by touching unsafe materials or tasting anything.

  1. Read or listen to the pretend story. Point to the details the question gives you.
  2. Follow wet, lather, scrub, rinse, and dry in order. Check that no step is missing and that scrub is at least 20 seconds.
  3. Check your answer against the example. Say what matches and what you would change.
  4. Try the practice questions, then the extra task. Drawing or spoken answers are welcome.
Worked example

See the method in action

The made-up strip is wet, soap bubbles, scrub twenty seconds, rinse, dry. The bubbles represent lather, so the five-step order is correct. A second strip skips from soap to dry. It needs the scrub and rinse cards inserted before dry. Looking clean is not evidence that those missing steps happened, and a twenty-second scrub is only one part of the whole routine.

Helpful tips
  • Community handwashing includes at least 20 seconds of scrubbing.
  • Drying follows rinsing; soap bubbles alone are not the whole method.
Put handwashing steps in order: A card strip reads wet-lather-scrub-rinse-dry. What fits?

Feedback appears here after you check. This is practice, not a graded school assessment.

See the answer and explanation

Wet, lather, scrub, rinse, dry is the complete order.

All five actions are in the recommended order.

Take it further

Draw a repaired strip for wet-soap-scrub-dry. Expected: add rinse between scrub and dry, and label scrub “at least 20 seconds.”
