Find Who Did What
Answer a story question using words in the story.
Supplied materials
- Paper and a pencil, or say your answers aloud.
Learn the idea
A character is a person or animal in a story. A detail tells what happens. When a question asks who did something, look for the character connected to that action.
Read our story: “Nia rolls a red ball. A small cat runs after it. Nia puts the ball in a box.” You can point to words in the story to check an answer. Do not add an event the story never tells us.
- Read the three sentences, or ask an adult to read them aloud.
- Say the two characters: Nia and the cat.
- Find the sentence that tells who runs after the ball.
- Write a new sentence answering the check, using the story.
See the method in action
Who rolls the ball? Nia rolls it. The first sentence directly tells us this.

a small cat
The second sentence says a small cat runs after it. The story does not mention a teacher, dog, or bird.
Take it further
Change the last sentence to “The cat puts the ball by the box.” Who puts the ball there now? The revised sentence says the cat; reread changed stories instead of keeping an old answer.
