Learn the idea
People receive information in different ways. An equivalent alternative retains every important task step in the requested form. Complete written directions can replace spoken instructions for someone who cannot hear them. A labeled diagram can explain positions; readable larger text can address a small-font barrier. A title or picture of only the finished result is not a complete set of directions.
Check both the stated barrier and the information retained. More than one form can be useful, but the supplied answer must meet this particular task completely.
For example, spoken directions say "draw a square, write A inside, underline A." Equivalent written directions must retain all three actions. An adult may read the cases aloud; learners may point, draw or say their reasoning.
- Follow the worked example one step at a time. Say or draw what happens.
- Choose an alternative that communicates the same direction in a usable form.
- Say which detail makes the example answer fit. Pick another answer and say why it does not fit.
- Try the question and practice questions. Read the rule again if your answer does not match the explanation.
See the method in action
Spoken directions say: draw a square, write A inside, then underline A. A learner cannot hear them but can read ordinary text. Supply the text "Draw a square. Write A inside it. Underline A." Compare action by action: square drawn, A placed inside, A underlined. A title alone or a picture of only a square loses required actions. All three steps must remain available in the equivalent version.

Helpful tips
- Check that the alternative retains every stated step.
- Match the required form and barrier; larger decoration alone is not equivalent information.

All steps in written text
Written text supplies every step without requiring hearing. The other choices retain the inaccessible audio or omit the steps.
Take it further
New spoken directions say "draw a triangle, write C beside it, then put a box around C." Supply equivalent text. Expected: retain all three actions and keep C beside the triangle; a title alone or C inside the triangle changes the task.

More practice: try new cases
Choose an answer for each problem. Explain your method on paper, then use the feedback to decide what to revisit.
