  • Paper and a pencil, or say your answers aloud.

Learn the idea

Ten single marks can be grouped into one ten. Draw a long box around ten dots to show the group. The group still contains ten dots; it is a quicker way to count them.

In a two-digit whole number, the left digit tells how many tens and the right digit tells how many ones. The number 14 has one ten and four ones: 10 + 4. Read the places, rather than adding the two digits.

  1. Draw ten dots and put a box around all ten.
  2. Draw four more dots outside the box to make 14.
  3. For the check, draw a boxed group of ten and six separate dots.
  4. Count by saying ten, then eleven through sixteen.
Worked example

See the method in action

14 = 1 ten + 4 ones = 10 + 4. The digit 1 stands for ten, not for one single dot.

1 ten and 6 ones

One ten is 10 and six ones are 6. Together they make 16. Six tens and one one would make 61.

Take it further

Draw 26 using two boxed groups of ten and six ones. Check 10 + 10 + 6 = 26, and explain what changed from 16.
