The idea in everyday life

Cards: A child says a pickup adult hurt them; B a child is unresponsive; C a child dislikes a paper color. Provided program procedure: safety concerns go immediately to Pat; emergencies call local emergency services and the trained lead without delay; reporting duties depend on applicable law.

The idea

Notice, protect and route; a helper does not investigate or promise secrecy.

Follow along

Respond to a concern and seek trained help — supplied practice

Notice, protect and route; a helper does not investigate or promise secrecy.

Cards: A child says a pickup adult hurt them; B a child is unresponsive; C a child dislikes a paper color. Provided program procedure: safety concerns go immediately to Pat; emergencies call local emergency services and the trained lead without delay; reporting duties depend on applicable law.

  1. 1. Step 1

Record A’s words and observation factually without leading questions.

You should see: Keep the exact stated concern separate from guesses about cause.

  2. 2. Step 2

Notify Pat promptly and follow safeguarding/reporting procedure.

You should see: Do not promise secrecy or investigate the allegation.

  3. 3. Step 3

Treat B as urgent and activate emergency help, not routine paperwork.

You should see: Call emergency services and trained help immediately; follow dispatcher instructions.

  4. 4. Step 4

Handle C as an ordinary activity preference.

You should see: Offer an approved color choice without labeling it an emergency.

Now change one thing

A new card says the child is having severe trouble breathing. Enter urgent or routine.

Your work

What to finish

A three-scenario escalation card with factual notes and qualified routes.

Common mistake

Watch for this

No first-aid qualification, abuse investigation or legal reporting determination is conferred. Actual danger requires emergency services; actual safeguarding duties follow the relevant law and organization.

How can I tell I understand it?

Support each lesson-specific criterion with your supplied-case artifact: I separated preference, safety concern and emergency.; I recorded facts without leading investigation.; I routed urgent help without paperwork delay.
