Package a reproducible result

About 31 minutes · 6 reading + 25 practice and checks
Time includes reading, practice, and questions. Extra videos or further study are optional.
See this course’s project requirements

An executable notebook and script that regenerate checked attendance totals, with raw data, an exclusion log, a data dictionary and a controlled rerun.

Keep your working files in your own notebook or software. Save a private description, checklist, and work link in My Proof.

What to include

  • Question and inclusion rules.
  • Preserved input and four-field dictionary.
  • Executable analysis with exclusion reasons.
  • Checked site/total reconciliation and interpretation.
  • Clean-session baseline, correction test and complete handoff.

Review and revise

Use these criteria to check your work and choose what to improve.

  • The stated metric matches the code.
  • Exclusions and guards are explicit.
  • Clean runs reproduce expected totals.
  • The package contains enough information to rerun and interpret it.

The idea in everyday life

Rebuild a fictional attendance result from preserved data and executable steps.

The idea

A useful handoff includes inputs, code, results, definitions and a tested rerun path.

Follow along

Package a reproducible result — guided practice

Demonstrate a controlled input change and deliver the complete analysis dependencies.

Use free local JupyterLab with a Python 3 kernel, or an equivalent notebook environment that can read uploaded local files. Put analysis.ipynb and attendance.csv in the same new practice folder; no extra Python packages are used by the analysis. The CSV rows are S1 north 8 held; S2 south 6 held; S3 north blank held; S4 south 0 canceled; S5 north 7 held; S6 south 5 held; S7 north 4 held; S8 south 9 held. The supplied analyze.py runs the same calculation with Python from this folder. Use only these fictional records.

  1. 1. Preserve the base

Copy the original attendance.csv as attendance-baseline.csv before changing it.

You should see: The original eight rows remain recoverable.

A variation should not erase the baseline evidence.

  2. 2. Fill a stated missing value

In the practice input only, change S3 blank to 3. This is a supplied fictional correction, not an estimate. Restart/run-all.

    You should see: Included=7, excluded=1; north 22, south 20, total 42.

A controlled correction should produce an exact expected difference.

  3. 3. Compare results

Record baseline 39 and corrected 42, with S3’s reason for inclusion.

You should see: The total increases by 3.

The change is explained by one input, not an unexplained new answer.

  4. 4. Save and hand off

Save notebook, script, both CSV versions, README and output files. Keep text report if HTML export is unavailable; optional exports depend on installed tools.

You should see: The recipient can reproduce either version with clear input selection.

A rendered report alone is not the executable project.

Now change one thing

Baseline total is 39. A documented correction adds 4 visits and changes nothing else. Enter the revised total.

Your work

What to finish

A notebook/script package with baseline and changed-input evidence.

Common mistake

Watch for this

Filling real missing values without a justified documented source.

How can I tell I understand it?

Complete the changed case, explain your result, and pass the three application checks.

Not yet passed

You’ll get an explanation for each answer. Signed in? Your results save to your account.

1A reviewer receives a rendered PDF but no code or input. Can they rerun the analysis from that alone?
2A supplied correction changes a missing count to 5. What should the change log record?
3The handoff claims no extra Python packages but imports pandas. What should be fixed?
