The idea in everyday life
Original fictional practice. All money is USD. No account, payment, personal record or outside participation is required. Fictional Town F exercise rule only: printed goods taxable 10%; editing service exempt; resale goods exempt only with the supplied valid practice certificate. Round tax per invoice to cents. T1 printed goods 100 before tax (cash 110); T2 editing 40 exempt (cash 40); T3 printed goods 55 tax-included; T4 resale print goods 80 with valid certificate (cash 80). R1 is a same-period return of 20 pretax from T1 plus its 2 tax refund. Opening tax payable 7; remitted 12 during the period. These are invented rates/exemptions/return rules, not California law. Supplied synthetic support records: CERT-T4 is certificate RES-F-204 for customer Practice Reseller R-4, permitted goods resale under Town F’s invented rule, status valid on the practice sale date 2026-04-14. Opening record TAX-OPEN-7 is the reviewer-approved prior-period liability reconciliation dated 2026-03-31, carrying 7 into April. Payment record PAY-APR-12 dated 2026-04-20 records authorized remittance 12, cash-ledger reference CASH-P12 and matching synthetic bank debit BANK-P12, status settled. These original record labels establish exercise matching only, not actual legal certification or a real payment.
A return reverses supported components rather than reducing an unrelated sale.

1. 4.1 Reverse
Match return R1 to invoice T1, original price mode and tax amount.
You should see: Return has a source dependency.
2. 4.2 Reverse
Calculate 20×10%=2 tax and 22 total refund.
You should see: Refund components reconcile.
3. 4.3 Reverse
Post sales reduction 20 and liability reduction 2, with cash−22.
You should see: Totals 263=250+13.
4. 4.4 Reverse
Change return to 30 pretax and recompute 3 tax/33 gross; retain the original sale cap.
You should see: No refund exceeds the supported remaining sale.
What to finish
A source-linked return and revenue/tax refund bridge.
Watch for this
Refunding tax from an unrelated transaction or treating all 22 as a revenue reversal.
How can I tell I understand it?
Verify that your completed source-linked return and revenue/tax refund bridge meets the three lesson-specific checks and retains the supporting original records.
