Know what kind of experience you are preparing for
See this course’s project requirements
Prepare a plan for a future workplace visit or placement, then explain what you learned from the supplied fictional observation.
Keep your working files in your own notebook or software. Save a private description, checklist, and work link in My Proof.
What to include
- Distinguish the learning format and its limits.
- Write two observable goals, four questions, and an evidence plan.
- Check supervision, activities, pay/expenses, access, safety, permissions, and privacy.
- Draft an unsent introduction and time-bounded agenda.
- Create a fact/inference observation log and an honestly labeled final reflection with a next question.
Review and revise
Use these criteria to check your work and choose what to improve.
- Learning design: two observable goals, questions, and evidence plans fit the proposed experience format.
- Participation readiness: supervision, access, safety, pay/expense, privacy, and permission questions are recorded before attendance.
- Observation accuracy: facts, inferences, and unobserved steps remain separate in the fictional log.
- Honest reflection: the final caption and next question follow the evidence and never claim a real placement or credential.

The idea in everyday life
Career learning can happen through conversation, observation, or a structured work experience. These formats create different responsibilities and evidence. Knowing the difference helps you ask appropriate questions and avoid claiming experience you have not had. In this course, every activity can be completed from fictional notices and dialogue; no actual host, placement, or employment is supplied.
The activity’s purpose and responsibilities matter more than its attractive label.
One step at a time.
Use the sample or information you have permission to use. Keep your work as you go. You can pause between steps.
- 1
Make four rows labeled informational conversation, job shadow, internship, and ordinary job. Describe the main purpose of each in your own words: learning through questions, observation, structured learning with defined tasks, or performing agreed work.
- 2
Read each supplied fictional notice and identify what the learner would actually do. A label alone does not decide employment status, pay obligations, credit, or permitted tasks.
- 3
For any internship-style notice, look for a learning purpose, timeline, supervision, feedback, and clear work expectations. For a shadow, clarify whether the learner only observes or is being asked to do productive work.
- 4
Choose the format that fits the supplied learning question and record its limits. You are selecting a preparation scenario, not accepting an offer. Keep questions about pay, legal classification, age, or school credit for the relevant responsible authority.
See how it works.
Fictional practice case: Sam wants to learn how a scheduling office handles competing requests. Notice A offers a twenty-minute conversation about the role. Notice B offers a ninety-minute observation of a coordinator, with no assigned work. Notice C describes a six-week internship with a defined scheduling project and weekly feedback. Notice D says shadow day but asks visitors to cover a reception desk alone all afternoon. Sam classifies A as conversation, B as observation, C as a structured-learning proposal, and D as needing clarification about actual work and supervision. The course uses B’s fictional scenario and does not arrange a real visit.
Did you cover these?
- Distinguish questions, observation, and assigned work.
- Identify learning structure and supervision where stated.
- Label the scenario as preparation without a placement.
What to finish
A four-format comparison and selected fictional learning scenario.
Watch for this
Assuming the word shadow or intern settles pay, responsibility, or legal status.
How can I tell I understand it?
You can describe the actual activity and the questions its label leaves open.
