From Federal Trade Commission. Watch here or open it on YouTube .
Follow the FTC video’s warning about ‘free’ report marketing and confirm that your request begins at the authorized AnnualCreditReport.com domain. What this lesson is really solving.
Request reports through the authorized portal and review each bureau separately. Save the report or confirmation securely because online access may be temporary. Work line by line through identity data, accounts, balances, payment history, inquiries, and collections.
Understand the idea before touching the steps.
You cannot improve or dispute what you have not inspected.
Follow these steps in order.
Take the action in each step; then use the deliverable below to prove the lesson is finished.
- 1
Use the federally authorized AnnualCreditReport.com site rather than a lookalike or paid trial.
- 2
Save each bureau report securely and note the date, report number, and access method.
- 3
Compare identity details, open and closed accounts, balances, payment status, and hard inquiries.
- 4
Highlight anything unfamiliar, duplicated, outdated, or factually wrong for deeper verification.
See the standard in context.
Alex downloads three reports and creates a table with creditor, partial account number, status, balance, limit, last payment, and bureau. A closed card appears on two reports but not the third; that difference is noted without being labeled an error until the account history is checked.
Inspect before you move on.
- The domain and security connection are verified before personal data is entered.
- Every listed account is matched to a known record or flagged for investigation.
- Reports and access codes are stored somewhere more secure than an email inbox.
