Time includes reading, practice, and questions. Extra videos or further study are optional.
See this course’s project requirements

An original eight-bar melody arrangement with triads, a checked bass part, two voice-leading choices and a score or note-grid plus optional free notation playback.

Keep your working files in your own notebook or software. Save a private description, checklist, and work link in My Proof.

What to include

  • Supply eight melody/chord/bass bars with explicit pitches, octaves and durations.
  • Construct major/minor triads and identify root/third/fifth.
  • Annotate strong-beat fit and intentional nonchord tones.
  • Compare two upper-voice options with movement/common-tone evidence.
  • Provide 100 word choice note and honest playback/export method.

Review and revise

Use these criteria to check your work and choose what to improve.

  • Harmony: triads/membership are correctly identified.
  • Parts: bass/register/duration are reproducible.
  • Comparison: alternatives have exact note evidence.
  • Scope: stylistic judgments and unperformed playback remain distinct.

Before you begin

The idea in everyday life

A complete note grid specifies pitches, octaves, durations, chords and voices. Free notation playback is an optional check, not a requirement to produce the core arrangement. If you export MusicXML/audio, inspect those actual files separately; document unperformed native application or listening checks.

The idea

A score or complete note grid is evidence even without playback.

Follow along

Compare two arrangements and document choices — worked practice

A score or complete note grid is evidence even without playback.

Original packet: melody.csv with eight bars, chord sequence C, G, Am, F, C, F, G, C; bass whole notes C3, G2, A2, F2, C3, F2, G2, C3; two C→F upper-voice options with movement 15 versus 3. Note: “I retained C4 in the closer F voicing; I left the bar 4 G as the descending nonchord note. I compared pitch grids; playback remains unperformed.” That is a truthful produced arrangement, not a claim that a software button worked.

  1. 1. 6.1 Compare

Assemble all eight bars with four quarter-note melody entries, one chord and a whole-note bass. Include upper-voice notes for the transition comparison.

You should see: All parts/bar durations are supplied.

  2. 2. 6.2 Compare

Audit chord membership, nonchord annotations, octaves and per-part beat totals. Correct any copied bar whose chord no longer matches its stated analysis.

You should see: Pitch/beat consistency is checked.

  3. 3. 6.3 Compare

Compare two arrangements differing in one chord or voicing. Use actual note-grid evidence or optional playback and record the method precisely.

You should see: One controlled alternative has evidence.

  4. 4. 6.4 Compare

Deliver the complete grid/score, construction key, comparison and 100 word choice note. Keep original working files in your notation/text app; My Proof records the project and optional link.

You should see: The final packet distinguishes authored music from optional playback tests.

Now change one thing

New score has six bars of 3/4. How many quarter-note beats belong in each complete part?

Your work

What to finish

An original eight-bar arrangement and comparison packet.

Common mistake

Watch for this

Submitting chord symbols without reproducible melody/bass notes or inventing a playback test.

How can I tell I understand it?

Another person can reconstruct the parts from the score/grid.
