THE LIFE STARTER · REASONING KEY AND OBSERVATION GUIDE
Practice method HOST-PRACTICE-1 · 2026-10-02
Original fictional examples; proposed, unvalidated learning activities.

Morgan: monthly remainder = 2400 - 1450 - 550 - 200 = $200. Listed on-site total = 300 + 80 + 40 = $420; shortfall against training savings = $270. Listed remote total = $100; savings left = $50.

Jordan: monthly remainder = 2600 - 1550 - 600 - 250 = $200. Listed on-site total = 350 + 60 + 40 = $450; shortfall against training savings = $275. Listed remote total = $125; savings left = $50.

Accept a reasoned decision to wait, investigate or conditionally select either course. Cost alone does not establish quality, recognition or employability. Do not assume unlisted fees are zero in the real world; the arithmetic uses only supplied charges. Useful checks include asking for all costs and refund terms, checking the relevant state's authorization where required, confirming recognition directly with a relevant employer, and inspecting verifiable placement definitions and denominators. A provider advertisement or testimonial does not independently establish a guaranteed job.

Four proposed observation criteria, each 0–2 (0–8 total):
- Budget method: 2 correct method and $200; 1 plausible method with a minor arithmetic error; 0 major/unusable method or no response within an actually returned task.
- Cost and immediate affordability: 2 both listed totals and correct savings gap/remainder; 1 partly correct; 0 major misunderstanding.
- Conditional decision: 2 defensible choice with tradeoff and uncertainty; 1 a plausible choice with incomplete reasoning; 0 unsupported certainty or unsafe assumption.
- Verification: 2 specific check plus suitable evidence and a clear boundary on the job claim; 1 generic "do research" or one useful check without evidence detail; 0 treating the claim as established.

A wholly missing, declined or administratively incomplete assessment is MISSING, not zero. Record reason when voluntarily supplied, without guessing. A returned attempt can show a missing criterion; document what was actually observed. Record assistance, response format, case and rubric version. Self-review and staff observation are separate. Do not convert these practice ratings into school grades, credentials or employment predictions.

Calibration before delivery: two reviewers independently score the same fictional sample, explain criterion-level differences, agree acceptable alternative reasoning and retain the original judgements. Revise unclear criteria before using them. Agreement on a sample does not validate the instrument or establish reliable scoring across all learners.
